Legal AI tools Hallucinate
It’s been a big week in the world AI. Apple released their version calling it, Apple Intelligence — the jokes could be writing themselves if it not does not go well, is that itself a generative AI joke?
Anyways.
To the few people who are subscribing and may actually being reading this (mostly law students), you may find that the most shocking thing to come out of the world of AI, is this study that shows Lexis AI and Westlaw’s AI Assisted-Research platform have hallucinations.
Hallucination is the term nerds use to describe when AI is cranking out a bunch of stuff that isn’t real. Or, put more professionally, it’s when AI creates false or misleading information and presents them as fact. Not good.
I’ve quipped - if you can call it that - that Lexis AI is the least impressive AI tool I’ve ever used. So it was surprise for me to see that it outperformed Westlaw’s AI Assisted Research tool — by a lot. Seriously, check it out.
Why does this matter?
The legal field, like healthcare, has long been known to adopt new technologies and implement them in an efficient manner making access to justice more accessible to everyone. Are jokes funny in a newsletter? Let me know.
Anyways.
If the leading legal database platforms are hallucinating, this is only going to slow down the already slow adoption rate of AI in the legal industry.
So — If you’re currently using any of these AI tools for your internship — you should probably reconsider. And if you are going to continue using them, double check your work. To which I’ll point out, this is one of those rare cases where AI is adding more work to our to-do list.
Quick note before the next section. If you’re enjoying the newsletter, please consider sharing it with a friend. I’d really appreciate it!
The first five people to get a friend to subscribe (it’s free), I’ll buy you a beer!
Sports and Income Taxes
Stick with me here — TAXES. They might be the most important metric sports teams pay attention to now.
NHL players are starting to acknowledge that taxes are becoming a significant factor in choosing where to play.
What could this mean for other sports leagues?
The most interesting way this could affect sports is at the college level. I think taxes could become the next big tool college football adds to their recruiting tool belt.
Taxes won’t be the biggest factor, that’s still the brand of the institution. For instance, playing for USC and leveraging their platform will still net you a pretty chunk of change regardless of taxes.
But, what if Texas offers the same platform and return. If players know about it and are indifferent to brand, it could be the difference maker.
I bet it doesn’t take long for coaches, if they’re not already, to start pitching their school as a tax benefit for the NIL deals. However, they need to be careful when doing that…see the lawsuit below.
Jaden Rashada was recruited to play for Florida at a cool $13 million. Florida - no income tax. He ultimately played for Arizona State with no guaranteed deals. Arizona - income tax. Now, I’m still just a law student and don’t know much about nothing, but I wonder if you factor taxes into the damages?
Let’s see what Lexis AI has to say on that…
Quick Side Note On Canada and Potentially Winning the Stanley Cup
Canada. A great country. One of my favorites.
Many people in the hockey world are cheering for the Edmonton Oilers to win the Stanley Cup because a Canadian team hasn’t won the cup since the Montreal Canadiens last did it in 1993. And they want the cup back in its rightful country.
I think this is slightly off base from what’s actually important about Canada winning a Stanley Cup.
Like 50 percent of the guys on every team are Canadian. The cup goes to Canada every summer. Take a breather, eh!
What we should be saying is that it would be fun to see a Canadian fanbase have their moment of glory — that would be much different and much more fun to see.
Semantics? Maybe. Probably, but that’s why I’m rooting for Edmonton.
Thanks for reading this week’s version, hope to see you on the next one.
